There is speculation as to whether Google will grant legitimacy to cites using criteria other than an actual link. Brand name citations and other mentions are being considered but aren’t yet going to replace actual links when giving credit for measuring brand awareness. Benefits to ranking are a top concern for brand marketers and SEOs.
- In A conversation with Google’s Gary Ill-yes (part 1) podcast at Marketing Land, our sister site, Gary Ill-yes told us that Google is looking at ways to measure brand awareness in search.
- Gary Ill-yes said this when we asked about how Google sources featured snippets with Google Home voice assistant.
- Gary explained that he first discovered Search Engine Land through brand mentions in forums, not through a link. He then goes on to explain that the Google team is looking at ways to measure “brand awareness.
